Meg talks about the "children at risk" green paper

Monday, September 8, 2003

Meg Munn, Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley and former Assistant Director of Children's Services in York, has welcomed the release of the children's green paper today (Monday 8th September). The Green Paper responds to the report into the death of 8 year-old Victoria Climbie to improve the protection of children.

Meg said

"It was good news for children when Tony Blair appointed the country's first Children's Minister, Margaret Hodge MP .

The proposed establishment of a Children's commissioner will ensure that there is an independent voice for children monitoring the effectiveness of this area of work.

The Green Paper puts children at the heart of services while allowing each local area to set up the right system for them. At the same time new Safeguarding Boards will be required by law making sure that the relevant authorities know they have a responsibility to ensure the protection of children. As a long-time professional in this field, I welcome these advances.

I am also pleased that Sheffield is one of the pilot areas for a Children's Trust, bringing health, education and social care together for closer working relationships."
