Meg Munn MP welcomes plans to tackle congestion outside schools

Friday, September 19, 2003

Meg Munn MP has welcomed new Government plans to tackle congestion caused by the ‘school run’.

The proposals will help schools put in place a travel plan, after consulting with parents, pupils and local transport organisations. The plans will consider safer routes to school, new or better crossings, local speed restrictions, dedicated cycle ways, secure cycle storage and sufficient locker spaces in schools.

Meg, herself a keen cyclist who cycles to the House of Commons every day said :

‘The plans published by the Government today are a real help to parents and pupils in Sheffield. Not only will they help ease congestion around our schools, alternative healthier options such as walking and cycling will improve the health and fitness of primary and secondary school pupils.

‘I want to work with local schools, pupils and parents to build a strategy that suits them. This announcement is excellent news for Sheffield. I shall be writing to headteachers to make sure schoolchildren have the safest possible journeys to and from school and that we minimise the congestion caused by school traffic.”
