Encouraging women and girls into non traditional careers

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently joined business representatives, students, lecturers and careers staff at a business breakfast hosted by Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WiSET) at Sheffield Hallam University. The event was an opportunity to discuss with regional businesses what can be done to encourage more women to take up careers in science, engineering and technology in South Yorkshire.

The question of why this issue is important was outlined by Meg as she welcomed everyone to the meeting, and gave a run down on the work that has been undertaken so far.  She was followed by Lisa Pogson, Recourses Manager at Airmaster UK, who outlined what they are doing to encourage more women to enter careers in these areas. Sarah Sykes, a Career Advisor with Sheffield Futures, highlighted some examples to highlight non traditional careers with girls in local schools. At the conclusion of the meeting it was agreed that Meg will lead an audit on what is happening to reduce the risk of work being duplicated.

Meg said:

"This was a fascinating event that highlighted some of the hard work that is going on by people involved in the sector. There is a great deal to do in tackling the negative culture in many of these sectors, essential to ensure that more women choose careers in these areas."
