Not Turning Professional Just Yet!

Tuesday, July 13, 2004

Women MPs were challenged to play football by a squad of women members of the Football Associations National Women’s Football Academy. Meg has never played football before but responded to the request to take part in an exhibition match at the start of the Co-operative Party’s Charity Cup Five-a-Side Football Tournament.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, was on hand to blow the whistle to start the match which also featured Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport Tessa Jowell MP, Vera Baird MP, Claire Ward MP and Bridget Prentice MP in goal. England soon scored but Meg was delighted to score her first ever goal to equalise.

The England Team played fluent football but the MPs battled on and with some tight marking finished with the respectable score line of  9 - 6. Tessa Jowell scored twice, Claire and Vera once each and Meg added another to her early goal.

Speaking after the match Meg said "I really enjoyed the game, the England women were great sports and it has helped to raise money for PiggyBankKids. However I'm not expecting any calls to turn professional."

The day's events were in aid of PiggyBankKids, the charity set up in memory of Jennifer Brown, Gordon and Sarah Brown's baby daughter. The charity aims to improve opportunities for children and young people and provide information and support for one-parent families.
