Britain remembers Women of War

Friday, March 11, 2005

Ten years in the making and maybe 60 years late, Britain will on July 9th this summer remember the many thousands of women who took part in the Second World War. Mrs Edna Storr (nicknamed ‘Smudge’), a Private Gunner during the war, Dame Betty Boothroyd, and Major David Robinson from the York garrison, have campaigned for funding and planning permission for this occasion.

Her Majesty the Queen is set to unveil the memorial, positioned in Whitehall, London, at a prestigious event in July. However there have been final problems with planning permission, and Meg Munn MP is one of many MPs who have written to the City of Westminster Council urging them to grant permission for the event.

Speaking about the memorial, Meg said;

“This memorial has been campaigned for over many years in order to recognise the vital role women played during the conflict nearly 60 years ago. It is disappointing that having come so far, and after raising over a million pounds, the project is being thwarted by the City of Westminster Council. I urge them to grant planning permission in order this country can at last remember the thousands of women who risked their lives.”

Midland Mainline have kindly donated a limited number of first class rail tickets for women veterans to travel to the event. If you are a woman veteran planning to go to the event please contact Meg Munn MP’s office for further details and the Midland Mainline offer.
