Improving girls involvement in sport

Monday, October 17, 2005

In a recent visit to Nottinghamshire Deputy Minister for Women and Equality, Meg Munn MP, saw first hand the sporting activities and innovative development work aimed at improving girl’s involvement in sport.

The Minister met local Councillor Chris Baron - Nottinghamshire Council Cabinet member for Culture and Community - as well as the council’s Arts and Education Worker - Sue Cole. Sue has done valuable work levering arts activity and professional artists into schools.

Meg first of all visited members of Calverton Miners Welfare Football Club who have just received the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award for work with young people. She then watched a girl’s football training session at Sherbrook School and a multi-skilled coaching session at Manor Park Infants School.

Meg said;

‘I was extremely impressed with the work being done to promote sport to girls, and get them to take part, in Nottinghamshire. Women have increasingly done well at sport, such as athletics which was encapsulated by Dame Kelly Holmes winning gold at the Athens Olympics. We need to do more to improve female participation in sport.’
