MP supports Organic Food Campaign

Tuesday, January 22, 2002

Meg Munn MP will be meeting with lobbyists tomorrow (Wednesday 24th January) at the House of Commons at the end of their mass rally in favour of organic food.

Meg, Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley, is herself a supporter of organic food and is calling on the government to allow time to discuss organic food and farming targets.

“We believe that increasing organic farming has major benefits for consumers, farmers, the environment, employment and animal welfare and so must form an important part of the Government’s review of farming. Demand for organic food is increasing by around 40 per cent each year but around 75 percent of organic produce is currently imported. We would like to set a target that 30 percent of farmland be farmed organically by 2010 and to develop an action plan to achieve this target.” (Summary of Early Day Motion 366 which Meg has signed)

Meg said “An organic action plan will help to make sure that retailers can source more of their organic produce from the UK and thereby support British farmers and it will also help organic food to be more accessible to people on low incomes.”
