Meg Munn and air rifles

Friday, November 1, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley has today welcomed Jonathan Shaws Ten Minute Rule Bill in Parliament.
The Bill aims to amend the Firearms Act 1968, by raising the age for unsupervised possession and use of air weapons from 14 to 17 years. This would bring the legislation relating to air weapons into line with other gun control legislation. It would not have an effect on youngsters under 17 using air weapons in registered clubs.
Meg said
"Although some would have it otherwise, airguns are not toys, they are weapons. They cause harm, injuries and untold misery, to humans and to animals.

There have been lots of examples in Sheffield of children, adults and animals being hurt by pellets,  I have personally held meetings with local bus drivers who have been shot.

Jonathans proposals would still allow the use of airguns in registered clubs where the young people can be supervised but would put an end to the current spectacle of bored youngsters randomly shooting live targets for fun. I very much hope that the government takes notice of this debate and that we see legislation soon."
