Meg thanks Sheffield Special Constables

Friday, February 21, 2003

Today - Friday 21st February has been declared nationally as a day to celebrate the work of our Special Constables.

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley was delighted to be asked to present certificates to hardworking Sheffield Specials recognising the hours they have put in.

SC 7117, Sarah Murdoch from Rotherham, a 23 year old Special Constable who is a nursery nurse at Hinde House Primary School, notched up 264 hours of voluntary service in the last six months. Based at Attercliffe Police Station, Sarah says she "absolutely loves being a Special, every day is different and there are real challenges."

Meg also presented Chief Officer Alan Richards with a certificate commemorating 985 hours of service by Special Constables at Attercliffe in the last 6 months of 2002, an average of 123 hours per Special.

Alan told Meg that his team "deal with all sorts of things from lost children to sudden deaths. One Special Constable recently caught and arrested a burglar while he was actually breaking into somewhere, and stayed with the case until the burglar came to court, where he asked for a further 20 cases to be taken into consideration. The role might be unpaid but the officers are working just as hard and on a wide range of things."

Meg said

"I get lots of letters from local people worried about crime and the fear of crime, these Special Constables are the ones who have volunteered to make those people feel safer. It is wonderful to think that committed and thoughtful members of our community have in just one station given nearly a thousand hours of service in those six months. I thank them on behalf of the whole city."
