Enabling Students to learn

Monday, January 10, 2005

Norton College last week added a new facility to its campus when Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn officially opened a new kitchen facility for disabled people. Accompanied by student Lucy Croft, Meg cut the ceremonial red ribbon to open the new classroom. The kitchen was created as part of government legislation making public and private facilities more inclusive and available to disabled as well as able bodied people.

Meg said;

‘This facility is a credit to the college and far from it being referred to as a disabled kitchen it should be described as an enabling kitchen. It allows for students who previously were at a disadvantage to be more independent in their learning.’

‘It is a fantastic example of how legislation does filter through and can make a real difference to people’s lives. The people involved in making this happen should be congratulated for their efforts’

After opening the classroom Lucy demonstrated how she was able to use the equipment to cook and clean her pots up with greater ease.
