Sheffield adopts body piercing by-law

Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet met today to set up new regulations for registering businesses involved in tattooing, acupuncture, piercing, electrolysis and semi-permanent skin colouring. It was Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn who successfully amended the Local Government Act 2003 to enable local authorities to regulate these premises for the first time. The amendment followed the death of Sheffield lad Daniel Hindle in 2002 after he developed blood poisoning days after having his lip pierced.

Meg, who has been supporting Daniel’s mother’s (Christina Anderson) campaign for tighter legislation and regulation of body piercing, commented on Sheffield Council’s decision:

‘I am delighted that Sheffield has adopted these regulations - ensuring that premises where body piercing is carried out are safer. I hope that through these regulations we can avoid another tragedy happening like Daniel and that there is a greater awareness about the risks involved with piercing.’

Meg is working with Christina, Sheffield City Council and local schools to produce an educational pack for schools on the risks involved in body piercing.
