Foreign language lessons for pupils in all schools - a lesson from Greenhill Primary

Thursday, March 18, 2004

Meg Munn MP has welcomed news of Government plans to introduce foreign language lessons for all junior school children.
Meg, herself proficient in five languages, recently visited Greenhill Primary School where she was very impressed by the range of languages which children had experience of.
“Learning through songs and counting is a great way to break down fears of languages and to encourage children for the future” she said.
Pupils from Greenhill School join Meadowhead School and Language College at age eleven, a specialist language school, and these classes mean that the children are well prepared when they start their secondary education and are already developing their talent.
“The new plans will mean that other junior school children in other schools all over the country will have the same benefits and experience the same joy of learning a new language as do many children in the south of Sheffield.”
From the age of seven, children will be offered tests in more than 20 foreign languages as part of a revolutionary approach to the way the subject is taught. The Government has signed a £7m deal with one of the country’s leading exam groups to develop the tests. As a first step, French, German and Spanish will be on offer from this September, with Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Punjabi and Urdu from September 2005.
