Getting stuck in

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Local MP Meg Munn recently met volunteers from the Gleadless Valley Wildlife Trust and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers who were hard at work in Gleadless Valley Nature Reserve. She joined the volunteers cutting back weeds and shovelling soil, picking up litter and clearing a pathway through the reserve. Other volunteers worked on similar tasks to ensure that the reserve is welcoming to local people and animals and plants.

Meg was invited by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), the UK’s leading environmental volunteering charity, to visit one of the sites they were working on. The BTCV have a grass roots regeneration programme to invest in environmental volunteering as a route to improve public health. They use their ‘Carbon Army’ to inspire environmentally aware behaviour, with volunteers in action every day, planting trees, managing water courses and growing food.

Meg said:

“With around 15 volunteers here today, all working extremely hard, we have a great feeling of team work. I thoroughly enjoyed my time clearing the path; there is a real sense of achievement when you see the difference your hard work is making.
