Lobbying for world development

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

During one of her regular surgeries in the constituency local MP Meg Munn met two constituents who wanted to discuss the damaging impact artificially inflated global food prices are having on the budgets of the poorest families in the world. Liz Coates and Jonathan Willis both support the World Development Movement and its suggestions for s reform of world trade in foodstuffs.

The World Development Movement is calling on the UK government to support proposals for:

  • all futures contracts to be cleared through regulated exchanges. Most contracts are currently done in private, which means it is impossible to know how much is being traded, and
  • strict limits to be set on the amount that bankers can bet on food prices.

Meg said:

“When I was a Foreign Office Minister I saw for myself just what zero-margins poverty looks like. In developing countries a substantial percentage of a family’s budget has to be for food. As we have seen in recent times, large rises in food prices result in child malnutrition and long-term ill-health.

I have asked Chancellor George Osborne and Shadow Chancellor Alan Johnson to support proper transparency and strict limits for financiers’ bets on food prices.”
