Examining the planets

Friday, March 18, 2011

Local MP Meg Munn recently attended a lecture at Newfield School as part of the National Science and Engineering Week.  The aim of the week is to celebrate science, engineering and technology and show its importance in our lives.  The lecture was given by Dr Susan Cartwright from the University of Sheffield, and it was about astronomy and the definition of a planet.

Meg was then invited to lead the session and got the children involved by getting them to enact how many people, especially women, aimed for careers in science and engineering.  She told them to follow their career aspirations and wondered if there was a future Helen Sharman amongst them. (Helen Sharman is Sheffield born and lives in the constituency. A chemist, she was the first Briton in space, visiting the Mir space station aboard Soyuz TM-12 in 1991.)

The British Science Association coordinates National Science and Engineering Week, providing a national context for each event. The idea behind the programme is to raise awareness, spark enthusiasm and celebrate science, engineering and technology to the young and old with various or no levels of knowledge and understanding and from all walks of life.
