Tennis making progress in attracting young players

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

As a long-standing tennis player local MP Meg Munn wanted to meet representatives of the Lawn Tennis Association to discuss their progress in attracting more people into the game. She met Gavin Sutcliffe, Tennis Development Manager for Yorkshire at Graves Tennis centre who told Meg about the growth in available tennis courts across Sheffield and the increasing participation of young people.

Gavin also discussed with Meg the problem that while participation is increasing tennis is still seen by some as an ‘upper class’ sport with some clubs having fees so high they prevent many people from joining. Meg was treated to a short game of tennis with rising young star Louis Cox, who is currently playing at county level but aspires to play at Wimbledon.

Meg commented:

“Tennis is a traditional British sport but it is often seen as being limited to country clubs and Wimbledon courts. The Lawn Tennis Association is working to change this impression and this is so important if we want younger, talented players to progress and get to love tennis.”
