Assurances over the future of Norton College

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently met Heather Smith, Principal at Norton College, to discuss how the College plans on ensuring continued educational provision for the local area, following its closure in 2015. Norton is due to close as part of Sheffield Colleges’ 15.6 million upgrade and investment in new facilities. Future students and courses will transfer to Hillsborough College and Peaks College from September 2015.

Given the distance of both Peaks and Hillsborough Colleges from Norton, Meg expressed her concern about how accessible courses would be to both 16-18 year olds and adult learners when Norton closes. Heather explained that Norton is currently in discussions with a range of local organisations and Meadowhead School about retaining some adult provision in the area. The College also hopes to be able to offer some under 18 courses following the move.

Meg said:

“Of course I welcome the planned upgrade for Sheffield College, which will bring excellent new facilities for students from across the city.

However, Norton College has been an incredibly valuable part of this deprived area of the city for a number of years. It is therefore crucial that following the closure of Norton, we continue to have education and support for both younger and older generations.”
