Great work being done to help job seekers

Thursday, February 27, 2014

Gleadless Valley Community Forum run a number of weekly job clubs aimed at helping people to overcome the barriers that stop them getting back into employment. Local MP Meg Munn recently visited the job club at Lowedges Community Centre to meet Julie Walker, Employment Support Officer, to find out more.

Julie assists job seekers with using the internet, job searches and applications, helping people to build skills and confidence. Meg was impressed to hear that as a direct result of the help provided by the job club, 16 people have now successfully found sustainable employment.

However, as Julie explained, job seekers are faced by many difficulties including insufficient vacancies being advertised and some jobs being advertised more than once. A further problem is that even when some people secure a job, they do not get the required hours for them to earn a living.

One job seeker told Meg that “things have definitely become more difficult in terms of finding and securing a job”. Despite this, Meg was also told of the inappropriate and unfair use of ‘sanctioning’, where the job centre has deemed someone to not be doing enough to find work.

Meg said:

“Julie is doing great work in assisting job seekers to get back to work. However a number of barriers make this difficult. The people I met at the job club were clearly determined to find employment, and we should be doing all we can to support them.

I am disappointed to hear how the sanctioning regime is in some cases being used to attack the most vulnerable members of society, when the intention should be to encourage claimants to engage more actively in job seeking.”
