Meg Munn welcomes Torture news

Tuesday, December 16, 2003

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley, has welcomed the news that Britain has ratified an optional protocol to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, to honour Human Rights Day.

Meg, the secretary of the UN all party parliamentary group and a member of Amnesty International for twenty five years explained that the protocol we have signed up to aims to prevent torture and other forms of ill treatment by establishing a system of regular visits by independent international and national bodies to places of detention. However the protocol will only come into force when it has been ratified by 20 states.

Meg said “Being a member of Amnesty International I receive regular information about prisoners of conscience and the stories of torture are horrifying. I am pleased that Britain has signed up to this protocol as a step towards eradicating torture in the world. The violation of Human Rights wherever it takes place, is something that should concern us all.”
