This energy factsheet was prepared by the office of Meg Munn MP and was last updated in December 2012. The information and phone numbers for the energy companies and advice lines were correct when this factsheet was produced. Please be aware that details may change and you may be charged different rates for phone calls to some of these numbers. If in doubt please contact your energy supplier directly.


Financial Support


Warm Home Discount scheme

For winter 2012 to 2013, you could get a 130 discount on your electricity bill through the Warm Home Discount Scheme. You qualify for the discount if on 21 July 2012 your supplier was part of the scheme, your name (or your partner’s) was on the bill and you were either:

  • 80 or over and getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
  • under 80 and only getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (you won’t qualify if you also get Saving Credit)

If eligible, you’ll get a letter telling you one of the following:

  • you don’t have to apply for the discount you’ll get it automatically; or,
  • you must apply for the discount by 13 March 2013 the letter will tell you why and how

Letters are sent between September 2012 and January 2013. Contact the helpline if your letter doesn’t arrive by February 2013. Helpline: 0845 603 9439 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).

As part of the Warm Home Discount scheme, participating electricity suppliers are providing financial support to a ‘Broader Group’ of their low income and vulnerable customers. You will need to contact your energy supplier to see if you qualify for the 130 discount on your bill. Warm Front

The Warm Front scheme provides heating and insulation improvements to households on certain income-related benefits. Qualifying households can receive grants of up to 3,500 for improvements such as loft insulation, draught proofing, cavity wall insulation, hot water tank insulation, gas, electric or oil heating. Priority Service Register


Energy suppliers are obliged to offer a range of free services, known as the Priority Service Register, to their most vulnerable customers. These services are free to join and are available to customers of pensionable age, living with a visual or hearing impairment, disability or long-term ill-health. Services include free gas safety checks and a password scheme which staff will use when visiting your home. Please contact your energy supplier for more information.

Any customer worried about their energy bills should contact their energy supplier. However, independent advice is also available.
